Sexy new boys in sexy new bands such as The Tatianas,

Second Sex and Neimo are making adrenalin pump not

only with their raw garage sound but also with their

leather jackets, skintight denims - sexy retro looks.

Boys, like flying ants, massing together in the

excitement of young Paris, suddenly getting attention

from style bibles such as 'Crash', 'i-D' and 'Dazed &

Confused'.

Monday night is open mic night at The Shebeen in rue

du Pot de Fer, fifth arrondissement. The heat is

unbearable, the almost corridor space filled like a

death-trap firetap, way beyond capacity. Sweat is

dripping from the ceiling. In a small section of

floor, the size of a kitchen table, faces are crammed

against a single microphone. The lights go out, only

the electric-acoustic guitar continues, then the power

is back on to smiles, delight. Mayhem. An atmosphere so

unique in its raucousness that Brooklyn have immortalised

the vibe in a song entitled 'Clandestine'.
